The Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville crackled with a nervous energy on the night of the 2024 15th Region Championship. The Pikeville Lady Panthers, a perennial powerhouse, were facing off against their rivals, the Johnson Central Lady Eagles. Pikeville, hungry for their fifth title in seven years, boasted a formidable roster.
Leading the charge was senior guard Trinity Row, the team's sharpshooter, averaging a blistering 16.4 points per game and shooting a scorching 40% from the three-point land, was a constant threat. Alongside her was the dynamic duo of Kiara Thornsbury, a relentless force in the paint averaging 14.0 points and 8.2 rebounds and Kristen White Wad, a crafty point guard averaging 11.8 points and 7.5 rebounds and a team-high 5.0 assists. Coach Kristy Orem masterfully utilized her team's depth, keeping fresh legs on the court and disrupting Johnson Central's rhythm.
In the final quarter, Trinity Row caught fire. With three clutch three-pointers, she propelled Pikeville to a double-digit lead. Kiara Thornsbury dominated the paint, securing crucial rebounds and converting second-chance opportunities. The Lady Panthers' defense, clamped down on Johnson Central's shooters, forcing them into contested shots.
The final buzzer sounded, and the scoreboard confirmed what everyone in the arena already knew: Pikeville 70, Johnson Central 41. The Lady Panthers erupted in a joyous celebration, tears of joy mixing with sweat on their faces. The crowd roared, their cheers echoing through the arena as they celebrated their champions. Rowe finished with a game-high 25 points including 5 three-pointers. Thornberry had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while White chipped in 15 points and 10 boards.
This victory cemented Pikeville's legacy as a dominant force in the 15th Region. Coach Orem's strategic brilliance, combined with the Lady Panthers' talent, work ethic, and unyielding determination, had secured their place in Pikeville basketball history. As they hoisted the coveted 15th Region trophy, the Lady Panthers knew this was just the beginning. Their sights were now set on the ultimate prize: a state championship.
